卡森的代表作包括《红的自传》(Autobiography of Red)、《丈夫的美丽》(The Beauty of the Husband)、《诺克斯》(Nox)、《工作时间之外的人》(Men in the Off Hours)以及《特洛伊的诺玛·珍·贝克》(Norma Jeane Baker of Troy)等。

Canadian poet, essayist, classicist, and translator Anne Carson was awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature on October 8.

The Swedish Academy said Carson was recognized for her bold and inventive literary work, through which she engages imaginatively with the classical literary tradition and creates new forms of contemporary expression.

Now 76, Carson was born in Toronto in 1950. Her literary work is difficult to fit into a single category, spanning poetry, prose, fiction, drama, literary criticism, and translations of ancient Greek literature. She is particularly known for combining ancient Greek literature and mythology with modern human experience, reinterpreting classical works through distinctive language and unconventional structures.

Among Carson’s best-known works are Autobiography of Red, The Beauty of the Husband, Nox, Men in the Off Hours, and Norma Jeane Baker of Troy.

Autobiography of Red, in particular, draws inspiration from Geryon, a mythological figure appearing in the work of the ancient Greek poet Stesichorus. Carson transforms the ancient myth into a contemporary coming-of-age story and the work is widely regarded as one of the clearest expressions of her distinctive literary style.

Carson has devoted much of her career to the study of classical literature and has taught at universities in both Canada and the United States. One of the defining features of her work is her ability to blur the boundaries between poetry and prose, the classical and the contemporary, and literature and other art forms.

The Swedish Academy has particularly highlighted Carson’s attention to language itself and her ability to discover new meanings through etymology and classical texts, qualities that have contributed to her highly distinctive literary voice.

When the Nobel announcement was made, Carson was in Iceland. Ingrid Carlberg, Permanent Secretary of the Swedish Academy, said Carson was surprised when she received the call informing her of the award. Carson reportedly told the Academy that she was in Iceland at the time, “listening to the wind.”

The award marks a major moment of international recognition for Carson’s literary achievements. She becomes the 19th woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Carson is expected to formally receive the Nobel medal and diploma in Stockholm in December. The 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature carries a prize of 12 million Swedish kronor.
