Reporters Zhang Jin and Zhong Jianshi from the North American Finance Network visited Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario on June 29th, 2023. During their trip, they interviewed Konzelmann Estate Winery, a prominent winery in the region.

On November 15th, 2022, Konzelmann Estate Winery, one of the oldest family wineries in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Canada, held an achievement exhibition for its founder, Herbert Konzelmann. The event was held to commemorate and honor the passing of the Canadian family’s first-generation pioneer, who passed away on November 5th, 2022, at the age of 84.

In 1984, Herbert Konzelmann, a fourth-generation winemaker who was 47 years old at the time, arrived in Niagara-on-the-Lake with his young family. His great-grandfather had founded a winery in Stuttgart, Germany in 1893 .

He discovered that the climate in Niagara-on-the-Lake, particularly along the shores of Lake Ontario, was similar to that of Alsace, France. The region’s sunshine, soil, airflow, and moisture conditions were perfectly balanced, making it ideal for producing clean, aromatic, and fruity wines, especially Riesling .

Herbert Konzelmann was a visionary pioneer in the Ontario wine industry. In 1984, he brought his family’s winemaking traditions from Germany to Niagara-on-the-Lake. He was the first person to plant grapes and operate a winery on the shores of Lake Ontario in Ontario, Canada. His award-winning wines reflect the region’s soil and climate, which are ideal for growing high-quality Canadian grapes. He was also a generous and passionate person who was dedicated to his family, winery, and community.

Not because he had to, but because he loved to,” said his son Eric Konzelmann. Eric Konzelmann is now the President and Winemaker of Konzelmann Estate Winery.

Niagara has become the most important and distinctive grape-growing region in Canada. Niagara wines have a light taste, rich grape flavor, and a rich and complex aroma. Niagara grape varieties are very special in the grape industry because they have high yields and can withstand the harsh continental winters of the US inland areas. Niagara is the most diverse wine region in the world. This is reflected in the diversity of Ontario’s multicultural population and the grape growers and winemakers of different ethnic backgrounds, who choose grapevine varieties according to their preferences and produce wines according to their wishes and diversity.
